How to participate as player - European Unity League
Abstract
The European Unity League is an independent Magic: the Gathering tournament series culminating in the European Magic Cup with €20k prizes.
From the smallest FNM to the largest convention, every event can participate and
award League Points.
Players collect these points to qualify for their National Championships,
which award invites to the European Magic Cup.
How to collect points
To participate as a player, there is no sign up needed. However to guarantee that you receive all of your points, please follow these steps:
1. Inform your local tournament organizer
For you to receive points, your local organizer needs to register their events for the league.
Hence it's essential that you inform your local gaming store (LGS) or other independent organizers
about the opportunity to participate in the league and award points.
If you organize events, sign up here:
2. Use your full name in tournament apps
Your full name will be the identifier used to track your points across platforms. Therefore it's really important that you use the identical full name on all tournament apps.
To pick a unique full name as your identifier, consider the following:
- Use your first and last name with a space in between, for example "Elliot Carter".
- Also include your middle name, for example "John Bob Smith", if your name is common in Europe.
- If the tournament app only shows usernames, input your full name with underscores instead of spaces as the username, for example "John_Bob_Smith".
To verify that your name is correct, you can check that the standings of the app list your full name correctly.
2.1 Change your name in tournament apps
Here are some tutorials how you can change your name in the most popular tournament apps, to make sure you appear with the identical full name:
Companion app
- Open the Magic: The Gathering Companion App and login
- Go to the Join ⚔️ tab on the bottom navigation (the one with 2 crossed swords)
- Click on Joining as followed by your name on top of the screen
- Enter your first and last name and Submit
From now on all your Companion results will be entered under this name. To change results from past tournaments on Companion, please contact your tournament organizer.
Melee
- Open Melee.gg and login
- Go to Manage Your Account Settings
- Make sure Display username by default is not checked
- Go to Profile
- Click on Edit next to your First Name and Last Name
- Enter your names and Save
Note, after you change your name on Melee, it might take up to 1 week for the correct name to show up on the leaderboard.
Please note that you must play at least one Local or Regional event to show up on the leaderboard, as your country assignment is based on the region where you play most of your events.
3. Report inaccurate/missing results
In case the results of a tournament are incorrect or missing, it's your responsibility to report this to the organizer of the event within 14 days. You can find their email in the details of the event.
If the tournament organizer is unable to correct the error, please contact us.
Frequently asked questions
To receive invites to the National Championships or the European Magic Cup, you must use your real name to track points. We will ask for ID to ensure the right players attend these events.
Yes, you can. Your country is determined by where you play most of your events and is set automatically. If we've assigned the wrong country to you, please contact us.
You collect points no matter where you play, but your country is determined by where you play most of your Local and Regional events.
If you played in a Grand Prix, you must play at least 1 Local or Regional event in your country to show up on the leaderboard.
Generally all countries (not only EU Member States) are eligible to host a National Championship and award invites to the European Magic Cup. However there must be a significant number of participating events in the country.
The number of qualifications is dynamic and depends on the player base of the country. The more events/players in a country that participate, the more qualifications will be awarded.
The following rewards may increase throughout the season:
- Number of players qualified for National Championships
- Number of National Championship events in the country
- Number of EMC direct invites for the top finishers of the leaderboard
We allow all Magic formats at our participating events, even unofficial ones. You can expect that the National Championships will be hosted in a popular format of the country.
The formats of the European Magic Cup will be chosen based on their popularity among participating events. They will be announced throughout the first half of the year. Currently we're considering the following formats for the EMC main events:
- Duel Commander
- Pauper
- Legacy
- Modern
- Pioneer
- Standard
- Limited
We are using a combination of different methods to prevent cheating:
- Players are required to use their real name. This allows fellow participants to verify the correct players attend.
- For Local events, only the player's best 40 results and 5 playoff results count.
- We have a fraud detection system that checks events and results for suspicious patterns.
We reserve the right to lifetime ban any player or organization on our platform that we suspect of cheating.
In Switzerland the Unity League is already an established series with a huge community supporting the project. Key figures Jari Rentsch, Antoine Albertelli, and Dae-Jin Rhee are taking the next step in running a EU-wide series and founding a company.
- Organizers pay fees for some events they organize.
- Entry fees for the National Championships and the European Magic Cup.
- We will run a crowd funding campaign.
- In the first year the founders ( Jari Rentsch, Antoine Albertelli, and Dae-Jin Rhee ) will sponsor the project.
- Hopefully we will find some sponsors evnentually. ;)
