Organizer guide - Unity League
Unity League is an independent ranking system for Magic: The Gathering across Europe.
Players collect League Points to qualify for national championships, and ultimately the European Magic Cup.
In the following we explain all steps how organizers can report event results and award additional points to their players.
Promote events
Each Magic event has a point multiplier, 1x by default. Organizers may request higher multipliers to give events more visibility, award more points, and offer invites to the Championship.
- Players get 1x points

Host a
event at your store
Attract players from across regions with a tournament.
Each organizer may run one per season. We recommend following the guidelines below to make it an exciting event for your players.
Provided by the Unity League
- 6x League Points.
- Direct
Championship qualification for the winner.
- Fixed bonus points for top playoff finishers.
- Prominent event listing in our homepage timeline.
- Easy online decklist submission for players, with decklists featured after the event.
Recommended guidelines
- Choose a popular format in your country. Modern is usually the safest competitive format.
- Target 30–50 players. Smaller events are harder to make feel special and profitable.
- Charge roughly €30–40, about €5–10 more than an RCQ.
- Make an exciting Top 8 prize pool: playable, valuable single cards or playsets work best. Use store credit for the rest.
- Use Competitive REL and one experienced judge.
- Pick a date without nearby RCQs, prereleases, Regional Championships, or other large local tournaments.
- Advertise in local WhatsApp, Facebook, and Discord communities.
Level up your weekly
events
Bring excitement to your weekly events with your own seasonal competition. Give players a reason to return to your store each week and stay engaged.
How it works
Only your own events count and scores are tracked automatically.
After minimum 15 events, your highest ranked players meet for a Final at your location.
What players compete for
The winner of your Final is invited to Nationals.
Top finishers earn bonus points at the Final.
Good to know
League events are charged per participant. No additional costs.
Ideally you run a separate League in each format. We recommend each format has a weekly League event, a separate leaderboard and it's own League Final every 15-20 weeks.
For smaller Leagues, averaging less than 8 players per event, we recommend a Top 4 Final, instead of Top 8.
Add additional prizes, boosters, or store credit for your community.
How to report events

For a Top 8 finals event, we recommend the following structure:
- Single elimination playoff with 3 rounds.
- Each match is best of 3.
- Players are paired randomly right before the event starts.
- Untimed rounds.
- The higher ranked player on the league leaderboard chooses who plays first.
Organizers may also choose a different structure for their finals.
Finals invitations are offered in leaderboard order. Players must have a registered Unity League account to be eligible. If a player declines the invitation or is not registered, it passes down to the next eligible player on the leaderboard.
No. Stores, clubs, associations, and independent organizers can all participate.
Events need to be public, played with Magic: The Gathering cards, and held in real life.
We send a combined invoice by email every few months. Organizers pay it by bank transfer or PayPal.
Unpaid invoices may also be shown as a reminder when you log in.
We recommend a separate organizer profile for each entity that regularly runs events, such as a local game store.
This keeps each store's events, leagues, and billing separate.
If you occasionally run events at different venues, those events can usually stay under the same organizer profile.
Participating events can be run in any Magic format, including formats that are not officially supported.
If your format is not listed on our website, please let us know and we will add it.
Eligible events are public, real-life tournaments played with physical Magic: The Gathering cards.
Players must be able to participate directly or qualify through a public process.
To award points, events must meet these requirements:
- The event must be publicly advertised.
- The event must be held in real life, not online.
- At least 4 players must participate and play at least one round.
- The full standings should be reported.
You can always run events as events if you only want the default multiplier.
If you are unsure whether an event is eligible, please contact us.
These are the maximum preliminary (Swiss) rounds and top cuts we allow:
Events with fewer than 4 players are not allowed and cannot be reported.
| Players | Maximum preliminary rounds | Top cut |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 4 | Not eligible | — |
| 4 | 3 | — |
| 5–8 | 4 | — |
| 9–16 | 5 | Top 4 |
| 17–32 | 6 | Top 8 |
| 33–64 | 7 | Top 8 |
| 65–128 | 8 | Top 8 |
| 129–226 | 9 | Top 8 |
| 227–409 | 10 | Top 8 |
| 410 or more | 16 | Top 8 |
Preliminary rounds may use Swiss, round-robin, group-stage, or another format, as long as the total does not exceed the maximum above. We generally expect the top cut to use single elimination; exceptional formats such as double elimination may be allowed in specific cases.
Events that use a Limited: Draft format in the playoffs may use a different top cut.
We use several methods to keep the league fair:
- Players use the same identifier on Unity League that they use in tournaments, so communities can verify who attends events.
- Our fraud detection checks events and results for suspicious patterns.
- We review suspicious cases manually and may ban players or organizations that try to manipulate the league.
Unity League is operated by Mana Grid GmbH and led by passionate founders Jari Rentsch and Dae-Jin Rhee. It started as a community project in Switzerland and grew from the idea that local events are more exciting when every result can be part of something bigger.
The league only works because organizers, players, and local communities keep showing up.
